The BMI is a good indicator of Body Fat?

Body Mass Index, also known as BMI has always been considered standard to indicate the amount of fat in the body. However, according to recent research, may not be as accurate as originally thought.

A team of researchers at Michigan State University and Saginaw Valley State University measured the BMI of more than 400 students from the university, where some of them were athletes and some not. We found that in most cases, the body mass index of students did not accurately reflect their percentage of body fat.

The research published in the March issue of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.

BMI is determined using the equation of weight divided by the square size. A model for CMHA BMI below 25 for all persons over 20 years. For Health Promotion (2005) recommended range sound is 17.9. Generally, an overweight person with a BMI above 25 is considered if the BMI exceeds 30, he or she is considered as obese. A person with a higher BMI is often associated with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and weight related problems.

The main problem in the use of BMI is that regardless of their sex and age, the same criteria used to determine if it is normal, overweight or obese. However, the BMI should be used with caution in order to determine whether obese or not, especially when the classification different categories of people.

BMI does not say exactly how much fat a person really have is because the nature can not really differentiate between body fat and muscle mass. This is particularly true when BMI is used to measure athletes a large percentage of them were often regarded as obese, which in fact are not. Many athletes tend to have a mass muscle because of high BMI during construction and not due to body fat.

Taking for example, two people with the same same height and weight, where one is an elite athlete to do a lot of weight and musculature other than simple exercises. All Both have the same body mass index, based on the equation alone, and both will be considered as belonging to the same category, but we know that sport is certainly not obese.

If the BMI does not distinguish accurately between muscle and fat, so how do you know if you have excess body fat or muscle? A more accurate measure is to look at the composition of the body instead. Body Composition consists of a percentage of total water, fat, bone and fat from muscle.

Such a measure can be done with skinfold impedance measurement bioelectrical photometry and heavy water. Most experts mentioned above requires equipment or trained personnel to measure, which is often not readily available for normal users to measure.

Now, however, monitors body composition is available on the market for users, using bioelectrical impedance can be measured very precisely the mass, bone mass muscle, the percentage of body water and percentage of body fat.

In short, BMI can be used as a quick reference or a guide to see what rank you belong. However, it must be account their physical activity level and your body type. A more accurate measurement remains to be seen in body composition. With self-monitoring consistently body composition, we can better understand specific physical condition and adjust your diet, the intensity and frequency of training accordingly. It also serves as a motivational tool to track progress in their training.
