Weight Charts Council: How to Calculate Your BMI

Set goals, measure your progress and make course adjustments to their behavior is one of the best techniques to achieve almost anything you set out. One of the most widely recognized types of letters of body weight is body mass index or BMI. Doctors and nutritionists around the world uses the body mass index to assist in determining whether people are at a healthy weight. You can use the body mass index if uses the metric system or pounds and inches.

Here is a step by step method to calculate your body mass index, along with tips to know what to do if your number indicates overweight.

1. Weigh

Start weighed. Any household level will do. Record your weight in both pounds or kilograms *.

2. Measure the height and the square

Then use a simple household tape measure and measure your height. Note: If you measure your weight pounds, measure your height in inches.

* If you measure your weight in kilograms for # 1, measure your height in inches and then convert the meters (Eg 165 cm = 1.65 meters). Now, the square of their height (ie, multiple the number multiplied by itself).

3. Divide your weight by the square its height

Now, it's just "weight divided by height squared (or, # 1 / # 2, above). Okay, almost there!

4. Finally, multiply by 703 (if not using the metric system)

In fact, if you were using the metric system (kilograms and meters) above, you are done: this is your body mass index! If you use pounds and inches above: multiply your answer in # 3 by 703. This is your BMI.

5. Determine what your BMI means

Well, now you have a body mass index number. But what to do with it? Well, this is what your number means in terms of whether it is likely at a healthy weight:
under 18 years: you are underweight
18 to 18.5: You are thin
18.6 to 24.9: You are at a healthy weight
25 to 29.9: overweight
over 30: you are obese

6. Limitations of BMI as an indicator of health

If you are not satisfied with the number of body mass index and what it means about the health of your weight, first of all, do not worry yet: this system is not perfect! For example, does not take into account muscle mass or body type. So if you are particularly muscular, for example, you can have a body mass index is greater than 25, but still can be considered a healthy weight.

7. What to do if you are overweight

If your BMI indicates that you are overweight, you need to decide if you is willing to commit to getting down to a healthy weight. That will probably mean a combination of exercise and eating well. Take the time to educate themselves yourself and how to get the most out of your body weight in a healthy range.

BMI is an indicator of a healthy weight. Other valid indicators used by doctors and nutritionists now include measurements of skinfold thickness (with tweezers), with an underwater weighing and Bioelectrical Impedance test. However, the IMC is by far the simplest method to measure health in terms of weight.
